The Bicycle Chiropractor is a Chiropractic clinic in SE Portland, Oregon
dedicated to keeping bicyclists optimally healthy.
Who is Portland's Bicycle Chiropractor?
Dr. Christopher Pierce, DC, a doctor of Chiropractic who has practiced in Portland and Beaverton, Oregon since 2001. Dr. Pierce
took to cycling at an early age and his love for riding a bike with family and friends never ended. Dr. Pierce says, "I remember being 2 years old and riding around the outside of my home on a blue tricycle with a red horn. I remember the day the training wheels came off. I remember when I was young, getting in trouble with my Mom for riding all day and into the dusk along the Erie Canal in Upstate NY. The rule was be home when the streetlights came. We would practice wheelies, riding with no hands on the handlebars, build ramps, put cards in our spokes to make cool sounds, race each other around the neighborhood, ride off road before mountain bikes were invented and we even built parachutes out of trash bags that we would deploy to help 'slow us down' after drag racing each other. My bike was my 1st choice of transportation. To me it represented going fast and freedom. There wasn't anywhere I wouldn't go on my bike and I didn't need to go anywhere specific just to enjoy the ride. I remember the crushing feeling of having my bike stolen from my back yard and the pride of earning half the money to buy a new replacement bike by working a paper route for the entire next year. I remember racing through traffic with my 10-speed laughing as I passed car after car. I still love to pass cars on my bike."
Dr. Pierce is a 30-year veteran martial artist, educated in athletic training, physical education, exercise physiology, Chiropractic and the Clinical Biomechanics of Posture (CBP). He is a distinguished fellow of CBP. At 6'2" and almost 250 lbs. he looks better fit to be competing at the Highland Games than racing a bicycle. "I'm a pedal crusher and I love to go fast! Yeah, I'm fast on the flats and no one can touch me down hills but man I had no idea I would grow up to be such a big guy. I'm a fast Goldsprint racer but the other big guys out there know the dilemma of mass' effect on speed when calculating E=MC2."
"I love Portland and I strongly support the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA). I reward those who also support the BTA by offering a Chiropractic care discount for BTA members." BTA website
Details: Through the year 2012, the offer for
complimentary/free new client exam (normally $60) will be extended to
all current BTA members as well as $10 off the already discounted $60
adjustment fee ($60 – $10 = $50). The not so fine print: Call The Bicycle Chiropractor at 503-236-0013

Dr. Pierce is a 2001 graduate of New york Chiropractic College (NYCC). His Chiropractic clinical internships were performed in Seneca Falls,

Oregon. He currently serves on the Oregon Board of Chiropractic
Examiners (OBCE) rules committee. He has two additional degrees in

What is The Bicycle Chiropractor’s mission?
"Our mission is to make Portland, Oregon the healthiest, safest and most accessible city on the planet for families to bicycle in."
Bicycle volunteer opportunities
ThinkFirst of OHSU and Family Adventures in Safe Transportation (FAST) are two programs we currently work with. ThinkFirst - Oregon is part of a national non-profit organization working with teachers, educators and community groups to reduce the risk of brain and spinal cord injury through community education and outreach. FAST targets youth in kindergarten through fifth grade and their parents and guardians. It is a workbook designed for children and their families to use together to learn about pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, and occupant protection. He is available to come speak about the health benefits of bicycling, bike safety, improving bike performance, or provide a mobile clinic for your bike race or event.
What sets us apart from the rest of the Portland's Chiropractors?
The
Bicycle Chiropractor is the first Chiropractic clinic of its kind in
Oregon to unify cycling and Chiropractic care. We are dedicated to providing affordable care to Portland's bicyclists.
We begin your exam and adjustments on your bike while you are riding it. We incorporate a hands
on approach to determining a proper fit and ideal biomechanics on your
bike. We also apply the postural corrective techniques of Chiropractic
BioPhysics / Clinical Biomechanics of Posture (CBP) to clients on and off their
bikes. We have the ability to make biomechanical and structural
improvements in the spine through postural exercises, postural
Chiropractic adjustments and postural traction.
Our vision:
We
envision a city that is a pleasure to the senses to commute, study, work
and play in, a city that you can ride your bike in like you were in a
small town where people were considerate and aware of one another. We
want a city where people aren't hesitant to ride their
bikes because they are scared of the condition of the roads and
attitudes of drivers. We a working for a healthier commute free from
exhaust fumes and harmful gasses. Bicycling is a great way to stay
healthy at any age. We want to help people of all ages feel like kids again by riding their bikes safely.
Philosophy on health care and fair exchange:
The Bicycle Chiropractor’s philosophy is that affordable health care should be available to everyone in Portland,
Oregon. That is why we have done out part in eliminating the barriers
to receiving Chiropractic health care. We have created simple pricing.
Non-insurance billing fees: $60 adjustments, $60 exams, and $40 X-rays (we have partnered with Chiropractic First, llc in Beaverton to provide these affordable X-rays). We use Oregon's Worker's Compensation fees for insurance billing.
Does The Bicycle Chiropractor offer sliding scale fees?
We
offer an opportunity better than sliding scale fees. Should an
individual need a hand up, we will trade Chiropractic care (an exam
and/or adjustment) for 3 hours of volunteer time helping
to create healthier, safer and more accessible bicycling in Portland,
Oregon. Volunteer opportunities include writing letters and emails to
editors, bloggers and politicians, helping with website projects or
volunteering at local Chiropractic or bicycling events, what ever suits
you best. My primary goal is to have a city full of healthy bicyclists
at any cost.
What can you expect with a visit to The Bicycle Chiropractor?
The
Bicycle Chiropractor clinic has room for 3 client's bicycles mounted on
CycleOps and Ascent bicycle trainers facing a big screen LCD TV and
stereo surround sound. We play Portland bicycle activity slide shows or
professional bike races from the perspective of bicycle mounted cameras.
You can race along with professional riders on the TV or leisurely
pedal on your bike, what your usual riding style is.
Can you really ride your bike in our office?
We invite our clients to take their bikes for a spin in our
office on a bike trainer. We evaluate your bicycling posture and body
bio-mechanics on the bike while you are riding. We help to make postural
and bio-mechanical and corrections while you ride. We take digital
pictures of you on your bike from all sides to show you your bicycling
posture and to help you visualize postural corrections. We can take
digital video of your cycling performance for further bio-mechanical
analysis. I will make minor adjustments to your bike set up if needed.
For major bike adjustments I can recommend you to a qualified bike shop.
Can you really adjust someone while they are on their bike?
I use Neuromechanical Innovations Impulse and Impulse iQ Chiropractic
adjusting instruments and manual Chiropractic adjusting techniques while
you are still on your bike. The Impulse iQ uses an
internal computerized microprocessor, accelerometer and pressure
plate to detect abnormal spinal stiffness and make corrections
accordingly. (Impulse research) After
your ride you bike and we have improved your cycling posture &
bio-mechanics we will finish your adjustments on the Chiropractic table.
Why do we begin your exam and adjustments on your bike?
Often, aches and pains are only brought out while you are
riding your bike, and are they are relieved with rest. This gives us a
real time, real world scenario for evaluating and correcting bicycling
related poor posture, faulty bio-mechanics, aches and pains. In the
past, clients who biked would lie down on the Chiropractic table and say
that they started to feel better immediately. This was because
they were resting, not vertically aligned under gravity and not
exercising. An exam while one is resting makes an accurate evaluation
even more difficult because the client has to describe the discomfort
from memory versus actualizing the discomfort.
What else besides bike riding analysis and Chiropractic adjustments does The Bicycle Chiropractor offer?
We have an all natural exercise physiotherapy suite for advanced bio-mechanics and postural training. Here we work with Neuromechanical
Innovation’s Impulse iQ adjusting instrument, Medicordz power bands,
balance boards, exercise balls, free weights, exercise bikes, a
vibration platform and more to help maximize core strength, extremity
strength, range of motion and balance. Dr. Pierce has created sport
specific exercise routines that are diverse and dynamic and in under 10
minutes will train you harder than most traditional 30 - 60 minute
routines in the gym.
Can Dr. Pierce adjust other parts of my body besides my spine?
Dr. Pierce in addition to adjusting the spine adjusts the extremities
including the arches of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders,
elbows, wrists, hands, jaw and ribs. The carpal and metacarpal bones of
the wrist can become subluxated from the jarring forces of the bike's
handle bars transmitting the bumps of the road or trail into the rider's
upper extremities. This can lead to numbness and tingling in the hands
and tired muscles. The tarsal and metatarsal bones of the feet can
become subluxated from the stresses
of prolonged pedaling leading to numbness and tingling or pain in the
feet and cramping. Chiropractic extremity adjustments are designed to
help these specific types of joint subluxations.
